By integrating with our client’s business management systems, Widewail invites our client’s customers to review their recent experience, then monitors and responds to reviews on behalf of the businesses. These responses are expertly crafted to include key content that attracts new customers and improves overall local search rankings. Backend Engineer
The backend developer will be responsible for taking high-level ideas and transforming them into working software. You will have the creative flexibility to help define and design our user-facing products both in terms of the user experience and the software architecture. You are responsible for ensuring the quality and correct operation of your own work. You are responsible for the successful deployment and monitoring of your work. The position would be based either in our Burlington, VT -OR- U.S. based remote.
What You’ll Do
Contribute to backend services and APIs.
Implement well-scoped features and fixes, from design discussion to pull request.
Write clear tests and follow our code review process.
Work with senior engineers to integrate third-party APIs and internal services.
Participate in deployments and basic monitoring with a mentor.
Document what you build so others can understand and extend it.
Learn our architecture and suggest small improvements as you ramp.
Required Qualifications
0-2 years of backend development experience through internships, projects, or prior roles.
Understanding of HTTP and RESTful APIs.
SQL fundamentals and ability to query a relational database such as MySQL or Postgres.
Git proficiency and experience working in pull requests.
Testing basics with JUnit or similar, and a habit of validating your changes.
Communicates clearly, asks good questions, and is receptive to feedback.
Preferred Qualifications
Exposure to cloud environments such as AWS and services like RDS or S3.
Familiarity with CI basics and build tools such as GitHub Actions or Gradle/Maven.
Experience with API documentation or OpenAPI.
Comfort with Java and basic Spring Boot concepts.
Curiosity about serverless patterns such as AWS Lambda.
Education
Bachelors degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
