We’re seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Backend Engineer to join our search team. You’ll partner closely with frontend engineers, product managers, and UX designers to design and implement scalable backend services that power our platform. While primarily backend-focused, this role will include occasional frontend work to support end-to-end delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop, and maintain robust backend services and APIs.
Collaborate with frontend engineers to integrate user-facing elements with server-side logic.
Contribute to frontend development when necessary.
Optimize backend applications for maximum speed and scalability.
Implement data storage solutions and manage database systems.
Ensure the performance, quality, and responsiveness of applications.
Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance and leadership.
Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback.
Troubleshoot, debug, and upgrade existing software.
Write and maintain technical documentation.

Qualifications

5+ years of experience in backend development with a strong focus on Node.js.
Proficiency in TypeScript.
Experience with RESTful and GraphQL APIs.
Strong understanding of database technologies such as DynamoDB, PostgreSQL, or MySQL.
Experience with AWS.
Knowledge of event-driven architecture and experience with technologies like Kafka, Kinesis, or SQS.
Strong understanding of security principles and how they apply to e-commerce applications.
Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing frameworks.
Ability to quickly and accurately estimate the cost and effort needed to deliver a feature.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with headless CMS and commerce technologies.
Familiarity with ElasticSearch or OpenSearch.
Experience with Ruby on Rails.
Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
Knowledge of serverless architectures.
Experience with monitoring and logging tools such as Splunk.

The compensation package for this role is based on multiple factors, such as job level, responsibilities, location, and candidate experience. The base pay ranges included below are specific to the locations listed, and may not be applicable to other locations.

California : [$101,000-$143,000]

Connecticut and New York: [$101,000-$131,000]

Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota and Washington: [$101,000-$121,250]

Nevada: [$95,000-$131,000]

Maryland and New Jersey: [$109,000-$131,000]

Hawaii : [$95,000 – $114,000]

This opportunity can be remote, but candidates must reside in a state in which Shutterfly is registered to do business. This includes all US states except District of Columbia, North Dakota, Mississippi, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wyoming.
