About The Role
We are seeking an Associate Software Engineer to join the Data and Technology Team within Harvard’s Office of the Vice Provost for Advances in Learning (VPAL). This role is integral to supporting VPAL’s online learning initiatives and the development of Harvard’s custom online learning experience platform. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining data pipelines, databases, and analytics infrastructure that enable scalable and efficient online education solutions. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work in a collaborative environment, engaging with cross-functional teams to enhance Harvard’s digital learning ecosystem. The role requires a combination of technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Qualifications
Minimum of two years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience.
Proficiency in relational database systems and/or NoSQL databases.
Knowledge of complex ETL processes and process automation.
Experience deploying software on scalable cloud platforms such as GCP or AWS.
Experience with building or maintaining APIs and services using RESTful architecture.
Expertise in programming languages such as Python and SQL.
Experience with distributed computing systems like Spark, Hadoop, or PySpark.
Proficiency with data integration and orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow and CI/CD pipelines.
Experience in building and maintaining insightful data dashboards.
Responsibilities
Support the development and maintenance of data processes, infrastructure, and analytics connected to learning platforms, CRM, e-commerce systems, ticketing, and marketing applications.
Collaborate with stakeholders including Harvard University IT and other entities to design scalable, reusable solutions and deploy reliable code.
Build, modify, and optimize relational and multidimensional databases, data flows, and interfaces within the data warehouse environment.
Implement and expand data pipelines through efficient ETL activities, ensuring data quality and integrity.
Develop and maintain new features, integrate applications with internal and third-party APIs, and support deployment activities.
Create and sustain tools for deployment, monitoring, and operational purposes.
Adhere to engineering standards, policies, and best practices to ensure high-quality deliverables.
Follow Harvard University IT standards, policies, and Code of Conduct to maintain compliance and security.
