In a recent regulatory filing, foodtech giant Zomato disclosed that it has been served tax demand and penalty orders totaling over INR 4.59 Cr concerning goods and services tax (GST). The orders were issued by authorities in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
The Assistant Commissioner of GST and Central Excise, Nungambakkam Division in Tamil Nadu, issued an adjudication order against the company, raising a GST demand of INR 81.16 Lakh. This demand is accompanied by applicable interest (yet to be quantified) and a penalty of INR 8.21 Lakh. The order pertains to the “excess availment of input tax credit and interest, penalty thereon,” as stated by Zomato.
Furthermore, Zomato has been hit with another tax demand order by the Assistant Commissioner of Revenue, Government of West Bengal. This demand amounts to INR 1.92 Cr, along with an additional interest of INR 1.58 Cr and a penalty of INR 19.24 Lakh, due to the company’s failure to pay GST on delivery charges, according to the filing.
